Organic farming is a system of agricultural production that offers more appropriate and sustainable packages than conventional farming. It focuses on production systems that are ecologically acceptable, economically viable and socially just. This course works towards the fulfillment of the University statement of respect for the environment and coexistence. It explains various organic principles and practices that guide sustainable farming and are geared towards the protection and preservation of the environment for future generations. It covers a wide range of organic principles and practices. Aspects of standards, inspection and certification, value addition and market opportunities are handled. Appropriate organic inputs are also discussed. Organic farming is applicable to the smallholder farmer and is increasingly becoming a practice that meets market and consumer demands.

Introduction: the meaning of organic agriculture, principles, and status, opportunities and challenges.
Organic crop production: feasibility/viability in relation to crop commodities and farming systems.
Organic livestock production: feasibility/viability in relation to livestock management systems.
Organic standards and certification: basic standards, types of certification, organic marks, procedure, inspection, regulations, and guidelines.
